The Invisible Workload: Why Your Mental Load is Tanking Your Perimenopause Energy
You’ve always been the "reliable one."
In the office, you’re the one who anticipates the problems before they happen. At home, you’re the human calendar, the magic-finder of lost PE kits, and the person who knows exactly what’s in the fridge for dinner (and what needs to be added to the shopping list).
You’re used to being capable. You’re used to being in control.
But lately, things feel... different.
You’re waking up exhausted, even if you managed to get to sleep. By 3pm, your brain feels like it has thirty-two tabs open, and half of them are frozen. You’re reaching for a third coffee or a biscuit just to make it through the final Zoom call of the day.
You might be telling yourself you just need to "try harder" or "get more disciplined."
But I want to stop you right there.
This isn’t a willpower problem. This is a hormone pattern.
And more importantly, it’s the result of an invisible workload that your perimenopausal nervous system is no longer willing to subsidise.
What is the "Mental Load," really?
We talk about the mental load as a domestic issue, who does the chores, who remembers the birthdays. But as a professional woman in her 40s or 50s, your mental load is actually a physiological stressor.
Every time you:
Switch between a high-level strategy meeting and a text about the dog’s vet appointment.
Anticipate a colleague's reaction to a difficult email.
Hold the "to-do" list for three different people in your head.
...your brain is burning fuel.
Specifically, your brain is using glucose and requiring a steady stream of hormones to keep those cognitive gears turning.
In your 30s, you likely had the hormonal resilience to "push through" this. Your oestrogen levels were high and stable, acting like a buffer for your nervous system. But during perimenopause, that buffer starts to thin.

Why your brain feels slower than it used to
If you’ve noticed you’re losing your train of thought or forgetting words mid-sentence, you aren’t losing your mind.
Research shows that during perimenopause, the brain actually has to work harder to achieve the same results it used to. Brain scans have revealed that women in midlife use significantly more mental effort for cognitive tasks than they did previously.
This isn't because you are less capable. It’s because oestrogen is a key player in how your brain uses energy. As oestrogen fluctuates and eventually declines, your brain’s "power plant" becomes less efficient.
When you layer a heavy mental load on top of a brain that is already struggling to regulate its fuel, the result is total exhaustion. This is why perimenopause fatigue for professional women feels so heavy, it’s not just physical tiredness; it’s cognitive depletion.
The 3pm crash: It’s not the biscuits, it’s the biology
Do you find yourself hitting a wall mid-afternoon?
You’ve had a productive morning, you’ve ticked off the big tasks, but then 3pm hits and the fog rolls in. You feel like you could put your head down on the desk and sleep for a week.
Most women blame their lunch or their lack of "self-control."
Translation: Your brain has run out of glucose, and your cortisol is starting to wonk out.
When your mental load is high, your nervous system is stuck in "overdrive." This keeps your cortisol (your stress hormone) elevated. High cortisol tells your body to dump sugar into the bloodstream for quick energy, which then leads to an insulin spike and a subsequent crash.
By 3pm, your brain is screaming for a quick hit of energy because it’s been running a cognitive marathon all morning. This is why you crave sugar or caffeine. It’s a survival mechanism, not a character flaw.
The "Wired but Tired" trap
This invisible workload doesn’t just drain you during the day; it sabotages your night, too.
You feel exhausted all evening, but the moment your head hits the pillow, your brain switches on. You might fall asleep, only to find yourself staring at the ceiling at 3am.
This is the 3am cortisol spike.
Because your nervous system has been "on" all day managing the mental load, your body loses the ability to switch off. Your brain stays in a state of high alert, scanning for those unfinished tasks on your invisible to-do list.

You’re doing everything right, you’re eating the salads, you’re trying to get to bed early, but your body isn’t responding because your nervous system is stuck in a loop of over-stimulation.
How to lower the load: The REFRESH Method™
At Health Coach Lucy, we don’t look at menopause support for business owners as just "eat less, move more." We look at the root cause.
To reclaim your energy, we have to address the Stress and Food pillars of my REFRESH Method™. We need to regulate your nervous system so it stops burning through your energy reserves.
1. Stress Regulation: "Anchoring" your day
If you are "constantly switched on," we need to create "anchors", small moments where you consciously signal to your nervous system that it is safe to downregulate.
The Transition Anchor: When you finish work, do not go straight into "Home CEO" mode. Spend 5 minutes sitting in the car or a quiet room. Do nothing. No phone, no lists. Just breathe.
Boundary Setting as a Health Intervention: Saying "no" or "not right now" isn't just about time management. It is a biological necessity. Every time you take on an extra task you don’t have capacity for, you are taxing your already-stressed adrenal glands.
2. Food: Fueling for brain health
We need to stop the blood sugar roller coaster that drives the 3pm slump and the 3am wake-up.
Prioritise Protein: Your brain needs amino acids to create neurotransmitters like serotonin (which keeps you calm) and dopamine (which keeps you focused).
The "Brain Fuel" Snack: Instead of reaching for a biscuit at 3pm, try a protein-rich snack. Think Greek yoghurt with seeds, or a handful of walnuts and a piece of cheese. This provides steady energy rather than a spike and crash.

You aren't imagining this
I want you to take a deep breath out.
The reason you feel like you’re wading through treacle isn’t that you’ve "let yourself go" or that you’re "getting old." It’s that your current lifestyle: the one where you carry the weight of the world on your shoulders: is clashing with your changing biology.
You’ve always been the one who holds everything together. But right now, your body is asking you to hold space for it.
When we address your perimenopause energy levels in the UK context: balancing the demands of a high-pressure career with the specific hormonal shifts of midlife: everything changes.
The 3pm crashes disappear.
The "wired but tired" feeling at night softens.
You start sleeping through to 6am again.
Your thinking becomes clear and sharp, the way it used to be.
